What I adore about For Whom the Bell Tolls (1943) based on the Hemingway novel to be shown on TCM 9/15/16:
- Screen great Gary Cooper (Robert Jordan) the highly principled action hero movie star as he also is in Sergeant York (1941), and High Noon (1952).
- The extreme romantic and touching close ups of movie icon Ingrid Bergman as Maria expressing her tortured past and hope for future happiness.
- The Oscar winning here performance of Katina Paxinou as Pilar, the fortune teller revolutionary leader-love her voice over flashback description of the events leading to Maria’s dilemma. Catch her at least equally strong performance as the mother in Luchino Visconti’s Rocco and His Brothers (1960).
The direction of the much underrated Sam Wood and production design by William Cameron Menzies which successfully create the sublime war torn world of the Robert Jordan and Maria romance
